protecting or preventing?

So a friend of mine posed an interesting question today, and it really struck a chord with me.

Question: If you spend so much time protecting yourself, you start doing so subconsciously, but will you ever be able to break the habit and take the risk of getting hurt?

Now, this question is relevant to me on so many different levels.  It’s probably relevant to you too in some way.  There are many people in life that make our world absolutely amazing, but it only takes a few to impact us forever.  Sometimes we think that they have scarred us, and we build walls up around ourselves to attempt to protect against it from happening again.  But are we actually protecting ourselves, or are we preventing ourselves from moving on – from moving forward. It sucks getting hurt, and it’s even harder to realize and internalize the good – the personal growth – that results from our (sometimes painful) experiences.  Getting hurt is part of life.  Learn something from your mistakes, but don’t shelter yourself from taking risks and living life.

Signing off with the song Falling from Iration, who played at the SCU Spring Concert last night!
